Hi, I'm Abhay Kumar. I like to throw up interesting things I encounter here. You can also see the result of my mustache pact with my coworkers, check out what I'm up to or see the few photos I take. I like to receive email and instant messages (AIM / Jabber), as well. Some links of interest: Calais Text Tagger, Powerset

I love when people make silly apples-to-oranges comparisons (from Twitter)

  • (public) Terry Chay: I definitely have a problem… with Ruby! :-D http://tinyurl.com/2gjua6
  • Abhay Kumar: mephisto is crappy. the same way that many php engines are crappy, heh. just because wordpress works well doesn't mean php > ruby
  • Abhay Kumar: all i'm saying is as a language, Ruby is far superior. You can't measure a language by the blogging platforms that are built on it.
  • Terry Chay: Superior to what? It’s slow, unscalable, poorly implemented, has an egotistical and inexperienced community working on it.
  • Terry Chay: I measure a language by its utility.
  • Abhay Kumar: I think basing your thoughts on Ruby purely on your feelings on Rails and maybe even just Mephisto is a bit ignorant.
  • Terry Chay: And yet my feelings about Ruby are very prescient. It may be because I have eight years experience in web scalability.
  • Abhay Kumar: How is that not an argument from personal authority? How about a discussion based on the qualities of the languages themselves?
  • Terry Chay: I have a number of discussions on my blog. But the general upshot is when you choose a language you choose more than its syntax.
  • Terry Chay: As for your claim it's "ad hominem" I have refuted the scalability weakness of Rails and the performance weakness of Ruby many times.
  • Terry Chay: The null hypothesis favors me, the burden of proof is on you to prove me wrong. Duh!
  • (public) Terry Chay: @abhaykumar Don't argue Ruby or Rails with me if you are unwilling to read my old blog entries. I was right, others were wrong. Bai!
  • (public) Abhay Kumar: @tychay I never said I was unwilling. I just think that your argument is moot when we're discussing via a system that is written in Ruby.
  • (public) Abhay Kumar: @tychay PHP is targeted purely as a web language and any other kind of development is is at a serious disadvantage.
  • (public) Abhay Kumar: @tychay Ruby started as a scripting language with a bias towards some webdev. Extending Ruby is easier. Embedding Ruby is easier.
  • (public) Terry Chay: @abhaykumar When not wedev we don't use PHP, unlike Ruby peeps like you, we don't have Not Invented Here. You just proved my point.
  • (public) Abhay Kumar: @tychay I'm not exactly sure what you said there but I've reached my daily quota for arguing against tunnel vision.
